Tryckenhet (literally “printing unit”) is a historical term used in Swedish printing and publishing to refer to a standardized unit of printed output. The term is attested from the early modern period through the 19th century and is most often found in trade documents, ledgers, and bibliographies from Swedish printers and booksellers.

Definition and variation. There was no universal standard; a tryckenhet could denote a certain number of pages, sheets, or copies depending on product and time. In pamphlets and almanacs it might be a fixed allotment of pages; in small books it could refer to a complete print run.

Usage. It was used to price jobs, estimate material consumption (paper, ink), and schedule production. The concept helped printers and buyers communicate scope and cost before the introduction of more formal modern measurement systems in printing.

Historical significance and decline. As industry practices became more standardized and modern units gained prominence, the term gradually fell out of common use. Nevertheless, it appears in archival sources such as contracts, account books, and bibliographic notes, where it helps illuminate historical production practices.
