trovärdiga

Trovärdiga is a Swedish adjective meaning credible, trustworthy, or reliable. It is used to describe statements, sources, claims, people, or organizations that are considered worthy of belief based on evidence, accuracy, and transparency. In practice, you would speak of a “trovärdig källa” (a credible source) or “trovärdiga påståenden” (credible claims).

The word derives from tro, to believe, combined with värdig, worthy. Grammatically, trovärdig is declined to form trovärdiga for plural or common-gender nouns (for example, “trovärdiga källor”). In neuter singular form it becomes trovärdigt (as in “ett trovärdigt resultat”). The related noun is trovärdighet, which denotes the overall quality of being credible or trustworthy.

Usage and evaluation. Trovärdighet is a key criterion in journalism, research, and online information. Assessing credibility typically involves examining evidence, transparency about sources and methods, author expertise, potential conflicts of interest, and whether findings have been corroborated by independent, reliable sources. The term is often contrasted with terms like osäker eller opålitlig (uncertain or unreliable).

Limitations. Even credible sources can be wrong or biased, and credibility can change over time as new information emerges or methods are scrutinized. Therefore, statements described as trovärdiga are generally understood as trustworthy under current evidence, yet open to re-evaluation if new data appear.
