Trommeltype refers to a classification system for drum brakes, a type of brake where the braking mechanism is located inside a drum. This system categorizes drum brakes based on the design and arrangement of the brake shoes and their interaction with the drum. The primary distinction is between "leading-trailing" and "two-leading shoe" designs.

In a leading-trailing drum brake, one shoe is positioned to exert a greater braking force due to the rotation of the drum (the leading shoe), while the other shoe exerts less force (the trailing shoe). This asymmetry in force application leads to self-energizing effects where the rotation of the drum helps to push the leading shoe against the drum, increasing braking power. However, this effect is less pronounced when the brake is applied in reverse.

A two-leading shoe drum brake, on the other hand, has both shoes designed as leading shoes. This configuration provides more consistent and powerful braking regardless of the direction of rotation. When the brakes are applied, both shoes are energized by the drum's rotation, resulting in a more uniform and stronger braking force. This design is often found in applications requiring higher braking performance, such as heavy-duty vehicles or motorcycles.
