Trombózishoz refers to the formation of a blood clot, known as a thrombus, within a blood vessel. This clot can obstruct the normal flow of blood. Thrombosis can occur in either arteries or veins. Arterial thrombosis often leads to a lack of blood supply to vital organs, such as the heart (causing a heart attack) or the brain (causing a stroke). Venous thrombosis typically occurs in the deep veins of the legs, a condition known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). A DVT can cause pain, swelling, and redness in the affected limb. A serious complication of DVT is when a piece of the clot breaks off and travels to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism, which is a life-threatening condition.

Several factors can increase the risk of developing thrombosis. These include prolonged immobility, such as during long flights or hospital stays, surgery, trauma, certain medical conditions like cancer or inflammatory diseases, and genetic predispositions. Lifestyle factors such as smoking, obesity, and a lack of physical activity also contribute to the risk. Hormone therapy and certain medications can also play a role.

Diagnosis of thrombosis usually involves a physical examination, medical history, and imaging tests like ultrasound or venography. Treatment aims to prevent the clot from growing, reduce the risk of pulmonary embolism, and prevent future clots. Anticoagulant medications, often referred to as blood thinners, are commonly prescribed. In some cases, thrombolytic therapy, which aims to dissolve the clot, or surgical removal of the clot may be considered. Prevention strategies include regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding prolonged periods of immobility.
