trinational

Trinational is an adjective used to describe something that involves or concerns three distinct nations. It is commonly applied in geography, international relations, and sociology. In geography and regional planning, trinational describes cross-border areas or initiatives that involve three sovereign states, either at a tri-point where borders converge or through formal cooperation frameworks that span three countries. A well-known example is the tri-border area around Basel, where Germany, France, and Switzerland meet and collaborate on matters such as transport, trade, environmental management, and emergency services. Similar trinational regions exist in Europe and other continents where neighboring states share borders in triples and coordinate policy across borders.

In governance, trinational arrangements can take the form of cross-border regions, intergovernmental councils, or European cooperation

The term can also describe individuals who hold citizenship or nationality in three different states. Such
