Trilateration is a method used to determine the position of a point by measuring its distance from three known points. This technique is widely applied in various fields, including navigation, surveying, and positioning systems. The core principle of trilateration relies on the geometric concept that if you know the distance from a target point to three other points with known locations, you can pinpoint the target's exact position.

Imagine three spheres, each centered at a known location with a radius equal to the measured distance from that location to the unknown point. The intersection of these three spheres will ideally result in either one or two possible locations for the unknown point. In two-dimensional space, this is equivalent to the intersection of three circles. The accuracy of trilateration depends on the precision of the distance measurements and the geometric arrangement of the known points. If the known points are too close together or collinear, the intersection area can become large, leading to less precise positioning.

A common practical application of trilateration is in Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) like GPS. Receivers on Earth measure the time it takes for signals from multiple satellites to arrive. Knowing the speed of light, these time differences are converted into distances. With distances from at least four satellites (three for position and one for clock synchronization), the receiver can calculate its precise three-dimensional location. Other examples include underwater navigation systems and determining the location of seismic events.
