Triflyylireagensit refers to a class of chemical reagents that contain the triflyl group, a functional group with the formula CF3SO2-. This group is derived from trifluoromethanesulfonic acid (triflic acid), which is one of the strongest known Brønsted acids. Due to the high electronegativity of the fluorine atoms, the sulfur atom in the triflyl group is highly electron-deficient, making triflyylreagensit potent electrophiles.

The most common triflyylreagensit is trifluoromethanesulfonic anhydride (Tf2O), also known as triflic anhydride. It is a highly reactive acylating agent and is widely used for the triflylation of alcohols, phenols, and amines. These metal triflates, such as scandium triflate (Sc(OTf)3) and ytterbium triflate (Yb(OTf)3), are often used as catalysts in organic transformations. Their advantages include high solubility in organic solvents and high thermal stability, allowing them to be used under various reaction conditions. The unique properties of the triflate anion, being a weakly coordinating anion, further enhance the catalytic activity of these metal triflates.
