Effective tribology reduces energy consumption, extends component life, lowers maintenance, and enables quieter operation. Environmental considerations drive the development of eco-friendly lubricants and advanced coatings.

Research in tribology aims to model, predict, and optimize friction and wear with computational methods, surface texturing, and novel materials. The term tribologiske is used in Norwegian-language engineering literature to discuss both fundamental science and applied design in this domain.
