Transurethral interventions refer to a group of minimally invasive medical procedures performed through the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body. These techniques are commonly used to treat urinary disorders without requiring major surgery, such as open incisions or general anesthesia. The approach minimizes recovery time and reduces complications compared to traditional surgical methods.

One of the most common transurethral procedures is transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition where an enlarged prostate obstructs urine flow. During TURP, a resectoscope—a specialized endoscope with a cutting loop—is inserted through the urethra to remove excess prostate tissue. Other transurethral procedures include transurethral incision of the prostate (TUIP), which relieves urinary obstruction by making small incisions in the prostate, and transurethral resection of the bladder tumor (TURBT), used to remove bladder cancerous or precancerous growths.

Transurethral techniques are favored for their precision and reduced risk of bleeding, infection, and scarring. However, they may still carry risks such as urinary retention, infection, or damage to surrounding tissues. Recovery typically involves a shorter hospital stay, though patients may need to use a catheter for a few days to facilitate healing.

These procedures are performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the complexity and the patient’s condition. Advances in technology, such as laser-assisted transurethral surgery, have further improved outcomes by offering less bleeding and faster recovery times. Transurethral interventions remain a cornerstone in urological practice for managing various lower urinary tract disorders.
