Transkutaaninen, or transcutaneously in English, describes processes, devices, or measurements that involve or occur across the skin surface. The term is derived from Latin trans, meaning through, and cutis, meaning skin, and is used in medical and physiological contexts. In contrast to transdermal, which denotes delivery of substances through the skin into the bloodstream or tissue, transkutaaninen generally refers to anything that traverses the skin or operates across it, including sensors, stimulation, and measurements on or through the skin.

Common applications include transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TENS), where electrical currents are applied to the skin to influence nerve activity for pain relief. Transcutaneous sensors, such as transcutaneous oxygen or carbon dioxide sensors, monitor gas tensions by measuring diffusion at the skin surface. In research and drug delivery, transcutaneous routes describe substances that cross the skin barrier to reach underlying tissues or systemic circulation, though most commercial drug delivery uses are described as transdermal.

Techniques to enhance transcutaneous passage include chemical enhancers, iontophoresis (electric current-assisted diffusion), and sonophoresis (ultrasound-assisted diffusion). Safety considerations include skin irritation, dermatitis, and the need to maintain sterile, properly applied interfaces. The term is common in Finnish medical literature, device specifications, and physiology discussions, with the emphasis on the skin as a barrier and interface between the body and external devices or substances.
