Transkateterhjerteklapp, often abbreviated as TAVI (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) or TAVR (Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement), is a minimally invasive medical procedure used to replace a diseased or damaged heart valve, most commonly the aortic valve. Instead of open-heart surgery, the new valve is delivered to the heart through a catheter. This catheter is typically inserted into a major artery, such as the femoral artery in the groin, or sometimes through the chest wall. The catheter is then guided to the heart under imaging guidance.

Once in position at the site of the faulty valve, the new valve, which is compressed within a balloon or stent, is deployed. The balloon is inflated, expanding the new valve and pushing the old, calcified valve leaflets aside. Alternatively, the stent containing the valve opens up on its own. The catheter is then withdrawn. This procedure is an alternative for patients who are at high risk for traditional open-heart surgery due to age or other health conditions. Recovery is generally faster and less painful compared to open-heart surgery. TAVI/TAVR has significantly improved treatment options for severe aortic stenosis.
