It was founded in 1996 by Gabe Newell and Mike Harrington, former Microsoft employees. Valve achieved early success with the first-person shooter Half-Life (1998) and its expansions, followed by Half-Life 2 (2004). The company also developed and published Portal (2007), Team Fortress 2 (2007), Left 4 Dead (2008), and the multiplayer online battle arena game Dota 2 (2013).
