The term describes a theoretical and methodological stance that treats social life as a system of exchanges and negotiated arrangements, where outcomes emerge from strategic interactions among actors rather than from ideology alone.

Origins and influences: The label aligns with strands of social exchange theory, rational choice, and transaction cost economics, and is used in political science and organizational studies to highlight how actors secure resources, prestige, and policy concessions through bargaining, reciprocity, and repeated dealings. In some Nordic and European texts, transaktionaalisten denotes analysts who emphasize practical governance and coalition-building over doctrinal purity.
