Traneksaamihappo, internationally known as tranexamic acid (TXA), is a synthetic derivative of lysine and an antifibrinolytic medication used to reduce or prevent excessive bleeding. It works by reversibly binding to plasminogen, inhibiting the formation of plasmin, which stabilizes clots and reduces fibrinolysis.

It is used in a variety of settings where bleeding is a concern, including heavy menstrual bleeding, dental procedures for patients with bleeding disorders, and surgical contexts to limit blood loss. It may be given by mouth as tablets or by intravenous infusion; topical forms (such as mouth rinses or gels) are available for local control of bleeding.

Contraindications include active intravascular clotting disorders and a history of thromboembolic disease, as well as hypersensitivity to tranexamic acid or other components. Caution is advised in pregnancy and postpartum periods, in people with kidney impairment, and when used with other prothrombotic risk factors. Possible side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and, rarely, thromboembolic events or hypersensitivity reactions. Renal function may influence dosing.

In Finnish, tranexamic acid is called traneksaamihappo. The drug is widely used worldwide and has a recognized role in bleeding management; it has been studied in numerous randomized trials and is included in many national guidelines for perioperative and gynecologic care.
