Traditionality is the degree to which a society, community, or individual emphasizes and preserves established customs, norms, and institutions that are regarded as traditional. It encompasses attitudes toward continuity with the past, the transmission of cultural practices across generations, and the extent to which authority and social life are organized around long-standing rules and symbols. Traditionality can operate in domains such as family structure, religious practice, dress, language, and ritual.

The dimension of traditionality includes preservation (retaining and re-implementing past practices), resistance to rapid change, and endorsement of hierarchical or lineage-based authority. It varies by context, often correlating with age, education, religious affiliation, regional history, and exposure to external cultural influences. In some communities, high traditionality supports social cohesion and identity, while in others it can constrain innovation, rights, or inclusivity.

In social science, traditionality is studied as part of cultural continuity, conservatism, and modernization. It interacts with globalization and secularization, sometimes facilitating adaptation by maintaining stable norms, or hindering reform when traditional norms conflict with individual rights or pluralism. Cases include family roles, gender expectations, rites of passage, and property or succession rules.

Critiques of the concept highlight ambiguity in what counts as “traditional,” power dynamics in defining tradition, and the risk of idealizing the past. Measuring traditionality is inherently challenging and often relies on surveys of attitudes, observed practices, or historical lineage. Proponents argue that recognizing traditionality helps explain resistance to change, identity formation, and the maintenance of social order, while critics warn against romanticizing inherited norms.
