Torokgyulladás, commonly known as pharyngitis or a sore throat, refers to inflammation of the pharynx, the part of the throat behind the mouth and nasal cavity. It is a frequent ailment, often characterized by pain, scratchiness, and difficulty swallowing.

The most common cause of torokgyulladás is viral infection, with rhinoviruses, adenoviruses, and influenza viruses being frequent culprits. Bacterial infections, particularly Streptococcus pyogenes (group A Streptococcus), can also lead to pharyngitis, which may require antibiotic treatment. Other less common causes include fungal infections, allergies, irritants like smoke or dry air, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Symptoms of torokgyulladás typically include a sore or scratchy throat, pain that worsens with swallowing, redness of the throat, and sometimes fever, headache, or swollen lymph nodes in the neck. In cases of bacterial infection, white patches or streaks of pus may be visible on the tonsils.

Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination and, if a bacterial infection is suspected, a throat swab for a rapid strep test or throat culture. Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Viral pharyngitis is managed with supportive care, including rest, fluids, and over-the-counter pain relievers. Antibiotics are prescribed for bacterial infections. Home remedies such as gargling with warm salt water and consuming warm liquids can help alleviate symptoms.
