A toponymist is a scholar who studies toponyms, the proper names of places, and the field of toponymy. Toponymy is a branch of onomastics that intersects linguistics, geography, history, and cultural studies. Toponymists investigate the origins, meanings, forms, and geographic distribution of place names, as well as changes over time and the social contexts in which they are used.

Their methods combine linguistic analysis of language roots with historical and archival research, examination of maps and gazetteers, and fieldwork to collect local forms. Modern toponymy also employs geographic information systems to map name distributions and analyze spatial patterns. Toponymy often considers different historical layers, including indigenous, immigrant, and colonial languages.

Applications include preserving cultural heritage, informing language policy and official naming practices, and contributing to cartography, navigation, and urban planning. Toponymists may compile dictionaries of place names, document local variants, and advise governments and mapping agencies on standardization and renaming in ways that respect heritage and community identity.

The discipline has older roots in classical geography and later gained prominence through systematic surveys of place names. Notable scholars include English toponymist Eilert Ekwall, whose work on English place-names remains influential. Today, toponymists work in universities, national archives, and geographic institutes around the world.
