Common topdressing materials include sand for greens and fine loams, compost or mature manure to add organic matter and nutrients, and occasionally peat or soil blends. The choice depends on soil type, climate, crop, and the desired effect. Particle size is important; a uniform, fine texture helps prevent layering and creates a smoother surface.

Application and timing are important for effectiveness. Topdressing is typically applied in small, frequent amounts, often after mowing or aeration, when the surface is relatively dry and the crop is actively growing. Equipment ranges from drop and broadcast spreaders to hand tools. Rates vary by material and purpose, with goal of avoiding smothering existing turf or vegetation and ensuring incorporation by rainfall or timely cultivation.

Benefits and limitations: Benefits include a smoother playing or growing surface, reduced thatch buildup, improved drainage and root penetration, and more even nutrient distribution when paired with fertilizers. Limitations include cost, the potential to smother vegetation if overapplied, possible introduction of weed seeds or pathogens with organic materials, and the need for proper timing and incorporation.
