Tootmisjäägid (production waste) are residual materials produced during industrial manufacturing that cannot be used in the production of the same product. The singular form tootmisjäägi is commonly used when referring to a specific waste stream, while tootmisjäägid denotes the category as a whole.

They can be non-hazardous or hazardous. Hazardous tootmisjäägid meet defined hazard properties and require special handling, labeling, and disposal procedures to prevent harm to people and the environment.

Sources and composition: Production waste arises in metalworking, chemical, electronics, food processing, mining, and construction industries. Its composition varies and can include metals, minerals, oils, solvents, organic compounds, sludges, and contaminated process waters.

Environmental impact: If not properly managed, tootmisjäägid can contaminate soil, groundwater or surface water and may release volatile substances or dust into the air. Long-term disposal in landfills or improper recycling can pose risks to ecosystems and health.

Management: The preferred approach is the waste hierarchy: prevent generation, reduce, reuse, and recycle, recover energy when feasible, and dispose only as a last resort. Effective practice includes source separation, proper storage, and compliant transport. Treatments include mechanical separation, stabilization, material recycling, solvent recovery, and, where necessary, thermal treatment or approved landfilling.

Regulation and reporting: In Estonia and the EU, tootmisjäägid fall under waste legislation and EU waste directives. They are classified with codes from the European Waste Catalogue, and producers must document generation, handling, and disposal with authorities.
