Tooterühmale is a protected nature reserve located in Rapla County, Estonia, covering an area of approximately 220 hectares. The reserve comprises a mosaic of wetlands, reed beds, marshy meadows, and small forest patches, all situated within the lowland plains of the Põhja-Kõrvemaa landscape. It was established in 1996 under the Estonian Nature Conservation Act to preserve the region’s unique wetland ecosystem and the associated biodiversity.

The terrain of Tooterühmale features depressions filled with clear, shallow water and saturated soils, which support a range of hydrophytic plant species such as common reed (Phragmites australis), sedges, and various water lilies. These habitats serve as breeding grounds for amphibians, invertebrates, and several species of waterfowl. Notably, the reserve is an important stopover for migrating water birds, including greylag goose, common pochard, and various species of ducks and waders.

The management of the reserve emphasizes maintaining natural hydrological regimes and preventing excessive nutrient enrichment. Periodic monitoring of plant and animal populations is conducted by the Estonian Institute of Zoology and Botany. Human visitation is regulated, with designated walking paths and informational signs to minimize disturbance to sensitive habitats.

In addition to its ecological value, Tooterühmale offers educational opportunities for local schools and environmental organizations, focusing on wetland ecology, conservation practices, and sustainable recreation. The reserve remains a vital component of Estonia’s network of protected areas and contributes to the conservation of wetland habitats in Northern Europe.
