Tonsilliitti, commonly known as tonsillitis, is an inflammation of the tonsils, which are two oval-shaped pads of tissue located at the back of the throat. Tonsils are part of the immune system and help trap germs that enter the throat. Inflammation of the tonsils can be caused by either viral or bacterial infections. Viral infections are the most common cause of tonsillitis.

Symptoms of tonsillitis typically include a sore throat, difficulty swallowing, fever, and swollen tonsils. The tonsils may appear red and enlarged, and sometimes have white or yellow patches or streaks on them. Other possible symptoms include a headache, earache, and a stiff neck. The onset of symptoms can be sudden.

Diagnosis is usually made based on a physical examination of the throat and a review of the patient's symptoms. A throat swab may be taken to identify whether the infection is bacterial or viral, which can help guide treatment decisions.

Treatment for tonsillitis depends on the cause. Viral tonsillitis generally resolves on its own, and treatment focuses on managing symptoms with rest, fluids, and pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen. For bacterial tonsillitis, such as that caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (strep throat), antibiotics are prescribed. It is important to complete the full course of antibiotics as directed by a healthcare professional. In recurrent or severe cases, or when tonsillitis leads to complications, surgical removal of the tonsils, known as a tonsillectomy, may be considered.
