Tonsilliitin is the medical term for tonsillitis, an inflammation of the tonsils. The tonsils are two oval-shaped pads of tissue located at the back of the throat. They are part of the lymphatic system and help fight infection.

Tonsillitis is most commonly caused by viral infections, such as the common cold or influenza. Bacterial infections, particularly Streptococcus pyogenes (strep throat), can also cause tonsillitis. Symptoms typically include a sore throat, pain when swallowing, fever, and redness of the tonsils. In some cases, white or yellow patches or streaks may appear on the tonsils, and the tonsils may appear swollen. Swollen lymph nodes in the neck can also occur.

Diagnosis is usually made based on a physical examination and a review of symptoms. A throat swab may be performed to identify whether the cause is bacterial or viral. Viral tonsillitis generally resolves on its own within a week. Treatment for viral tonsillitis focuses on managing symptoms with rest, fluids, and over-the-counter pain relievers. Antibiotics are not effective against viral infections. Bacterial tonsillitis, such as strep throat, requires antibiotic treatment to prevent complications like rheumatic fever or kidney inflammation.

Recurrent or severe tonsillitis, especially when it leads to breathing difficulties or other significant issues, may warrant a tonsillectomy, which is the surgical removal of the tonsils. This procedure is typically considered when tonsillitis significantly impacts a person's quality of life or causes recurrent complications.
