Tolnaftaat, known in English as tolnaftate, is a topical antifungal medication used to treat common superficial fungal infections of the skin, including athlete's foot (tinea pedis), ringworm (tinea corporis), and jock itch (tinea cruris). It is widely available over the counter in many countries and is sold in creams, liquids, powders, and sprays. Brand-name products such as Tinactin are common in North America and other markets.

The exact mechanism is not fully understood; tolnaftate is generally described as fungistatic, slowing the growth of fungi rather than rapidly killing them. It has activity mainly against dermatophytes and some yeasts; it is not considered effective for invasive fungal infections or most fungal nail infections.

Administration typically involves applying the product to the affected area once or twice daily according to the label, usually for two to four weeks, or until several days after symptoms resolve. It is important to continue treatment for the full recommended course to reduce relapse. Avoid applying to broken skin, eyes, or mucous membranes, and do not cover treated areas with tight bandages unless directed.

Safety and tolerability: Tolnaftaat is generally well tolerated. Common mild local reactions can include itching, burning, or irritation. Serious allergic reactions are rare. Do not use if you have a known hypersensitivity to tolnaftate or related compounds. Pregnant or breastfeeding individuals should consult a clinician before use.
