Tobacco growing, also known as tobacco cultivation, is the agricultural process of growing tobacco plants for the production of tobacco products. The genus Nicotiana, to which tobacco plants belong, comprises about 70 species, but Nicotiana tabacum is the most widely cultivated for commercial purposes. Tobacco is primarily grown from seed, with seedlings typically transplanted into fields after germination. The plants require a warm climate, ample sunlight, and well-drained soil. Curing methods include air curing, flue curing, sun curing, and fire curing, each imparting different qualities to the leaf. After curing, the tobacco is further processed, including aging and blending, before it is used in the manufacture of cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, chewing tobacco, and snuff. Tobacco growing is a significant agricultural industry in many countries worldwide.
