Characteristics of timeline-oriented work include an emphasis on causality and dependencies, explicit temporal metadata, and the use of visualizations such as timelines or time-series charts. It often relies on temporal data models, versioned records, or event-centric architectures like event sourcing, which store and reconstruct state from a sequence of events.

Applications span several domains. In project management, timeline-oriented tools support planning with Gantt charts and milestone tracking. In history, journalism, and storytelling, they help convey sequences of events and causal relationships. In data visualization and knowledge management, timeline-oriented designs enable users to explore data across time. In software, they influence UX by presenting user actions in chronological order, and in databases they motivate temporal or bitemporal modeling to query past states.

Limitations and considerations include that not all information is strictly temporal, and an overemphasis on time can obscure parallel or cyclical relationships.
