tiltfunktion

Tiltfunktion, or tilt function, is a term used in physics, engineering and computer graphics to describe a function that relates some input variable to the tilt, or inclination, of an object or reference frame. In practice tilt is often expressed as an angle, such as pitch or roll, that measures rotation about a horizontal axis. The tiltfunktion may map time, spatial coordinates, or sensor signals to a tilt angle or a pair of tilt angles.

Mathematically, a simple one-axis tiltfunktion can be written as θ = f(t), where θ is the tilt angle about a chosen axis and t is a variable such as time. For multi-axis tilt, the function can be vector-valued, θ = (θx, θy, θz) or reduced to pitch and roll. In sensor setups, tilt about a given axis can be computed from sensor readings via trigonometric formulas, for example using accelerometer components to estimate the gravity direction.

Common applications include attitude estimation in aviation and robotics, camera stabilization and control, 3D rendering where tilt affects shading or parallax, and tilt-compensation in navigation systems. In these contexts the tiltfunktion is central to translating raw sensor data into a meaningful orientation parameter.

Limitations arise from representations with singularities, such as gimbal lock in Euler-angle tilts, and from measurement noise. Fusion algorithms combining data from multiple sensors often produce a robust tilt estimate. The term tiltfunktion is sometimes used generally to describe any function that assigns an orientation parameter as a function of time or input.
