Tilannetiedolle, often translated as "situational awareness," refers to the perception of environmental elements and events with respect to time or space, the comprehension of their meaning, and the projection of their future status. Effective situational awareness involves three levels: Level 1 is the perception of the elements in the environment within a volume of time and space. Level 2 is the comprehension of the current situation, understanding the meaning of perceived elements. Level 3 is the projection of future actions of elements in the near future, allowing for proactive decision-making and planning.

Maintaining situational awareness requires continuous monitoring, attention, and cognitive processing. Factors that can degrade situational awareness include information overload, stress, fatigue, complacency, and interruptions. In complex and dynamic environments, the ability to build and maintain accurate situational awareness can be the difference between success and failure, or even survival.
