Thymoma is a type of cancer that originates in the thymus, a small gland located in the chest just behind the sternum. The thymus plays a crucial role in the immune system, particularly in the development of T-cells. Thymomas are the most common type of tumor arising from the thymus gland and are considered rare overall. They are often slow-growing and can be benign or malignant.

The exact cause of thymoma is unknown, but there are associations with certain genetic syndromes and autoimmune diseases. Myasthenia gravis is the most frequently associated condition, with a significant percentage of individuals with myasthenia gravis having a thymoma. Other associated conditions include pure red cell aplasia, hypogammaglobulinemia, and systemic lupus erythematosus.

Symptoms of thymoma can vary. Many thymomas are asymptomatic and discovered incidentally on chest imaging performed for other reasons. When symptoms do occur, they can include chest pain, shortness of breath, cough, and difficulty swallowing. Symptoms related to associated autoimmune conditions may also be the first indication of a thymoma.

Diagnosis typically involves imaging studies such as chest X-rays, CT scans, or MRI to visualize the tumor. A biopsy is usually performed to confirm the diagnosis and determine the type of thymoma. Treatment depends on the stage and type of thymoma, as well as whether it has spread. Surgery to remove the tumor is the primary treatment for localized thymomas. Radiation therapy and chemotherapy may be used for more advanced or invasive tumors. The prognosis for thymoma varies widely depending on the stage at diagnosis and the treatment received.
