Thermopilebased refers to devices or sensors that rely on a thermopile to convert infrared radiation into an electrical signal. A thermopile consists of many thermocouples connected in series, with the hot junctions exposed to incident infrared energy and the cold junctions kept at a reference temperature. The temperature difference across the junctions generates a small voltage that is proportional to the absorbed radiant power, allowing measurement of temperature or radiation intensity without contact.

In operation, the active area of a thermopile is typically coated with a selective infrared-absorbing black coating and housed behind an IR window and protective shielding. The emitted or transmitted IR energy heats the hot junctions, while the cold junctions are temperature-stabilized. The resulting voltage is usually in the millivolt or microvolt range, requiring amplification and signal processing. Modern thermopile sensors are often fabricated on silicon or ceramic substrates and may include on-chip signal conditioning and temperature compensation to improve accuracy in varying environments. They commonly respond to mid-infrared wavelengths in the roughly 2 to 16 micrometers range, with many detectors optimized for a narrower band around 8 to 14 micrometers.

Applications of thermopilebased sensors encompass non-contact temperature measurement and process control, infrared thermography and thermal imaging, flame and gas detection, and safety systems where infrared energy is monitored. Advantages include ruggedness, no cooling requirement, and wide dynamic range, while limitations involve relatively low intrinsic sensitivity, reliance on calibration, and drift with ambient temperature.
