Testikierrokset, often referred to as testicular torsion in English, is a medical emergency that occurs when the spermatic cord, which supplies blood to the testicle, becomes twisted. This twisting cuts off the blood supply to the testicle, causing sudden, severe pain and swelling. The condition most commonly affects adolescent males, but it can occur at any age.

The primary symptom of testicular torsion is abrupt, intense pain in one testicle. This pain can range from mild to excruciating and may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. The affected testicle may also appear higher than the other or be swollen and red. In some cases, the pain might be intermittent before becoming constant.

The exact cause of testicular torsion is not always clear. It is thought to be related to a congenital anomaly where the testicle is not properly secured within the scrotum, allowing it to rotate more freely. Trauma to the scrotum can sometimes precipitate torsion, but often it occurs spontaneously, even during sleep.

Prompt medical attention is crucial for testicular torsion. The diagnosis is typically made through a physical examination and can be confirmed with an ultrasound. If torsion is diagnosed, surgery is usually required to untwist the spermatic cord and reattach the testicle to the scrotum to prevent future twisting. The success of surgery in saving the testicle depends heavily on how quickly treatment is initiated. If blood supply is cut off for too long, the testicle may be irreversibly damaged and require removal.
