It is the third level of prevention in public health, following primærforebygging (preventing initial occurrence) and sekundærforebygging (early detection and treatment). This level of prevention often involves managing long-term health conditions. Examples include cardiac rehabilitation programs after a heart attack, diabetes management education to prevent complications like neuropathy or retinopathy, physical therapy to restore function after an injury or stroke, and support groups for individuals with mental health conditions. The focus is on adapting to the disease, maximizing functional capacity, and preventing further deterioration or disability. It acknowledges that the disease is present and seeks to mitigate its negative consequences. Tertiary prevention strategies are typically implemented by healthcare professionals and are tailored to the specific needs of the individual and their condition.
