Thermostatic radiator valves, often abbreviated as TRVs, are devices fitted to hot water radiators that control the room temperature. They consist of a valve body and a thermostatic actuator. The actuator contains a temperature-sensitive element, typically a bellows filled with a liquid or gas that expands when heated.

As the room temperature rises, the liquid or gas inside the bellows expands, pushing on a pin within the valve. This pin movement gradually closes the valve, reducing the flow of hot water into the radiator and thus lowering the heat output. Conversely, when the room temperature falls, the liquid or gas contracts, the pin retracts, and the valve opens, allowing more hot water to flow into the radiator and increase the heat output.

TRVs allow for individual room temperature control, meaning each radiator can be set to a desired temperature independently. This can lead to significant energy savings by preventing overheating in unoccupied rooms or rooms that are already warm enough. They are a common feature in modern central heating systems and are considered an effective way to improve comfort and efficiency. Installation is typically straightforward, replacing the manual lockshield valve on the radiator. Different models are available, including liquid-filled and electronic versions, offering varying levels of precision and functionality.
