Teravuses are a genus of large, armored detritivores native to arid highland regions of the fictional continent of Thaloria. They are slow-moving, burrowing animals that feed primarily on leaf litter and fibrous plant matter, contributing to soil formation and nutrient cycling. Adults typically measure 90 to 120 cm in length, with a broad, flattened carapace composed of interlocking scutes and a sandy, mottled coloration that provides camouflage in rocky terrain. The limbs are stout, ending in strong claws adapted for digging.

Teravuses inhabit networks of burrows beneath rocky outcrops and windswept plains. They are mostly nocturnal, emerging at night to forage during cooler hours. Their metabolism is slow, allowing them to survive extended dry periods by reducing activity and sharply lowering water loss. They host a specialized gut microbiome that helps break down tough desert plant material.

Reproduction occurs seasonally after rains. Females lay eggs in subterranean chambers, with clutches of 2–6 eggs; incubation lasts several weeks. Hatchlings are independent within days and reach maturity after two to three years. Social behavior is limited, though individuals may temporarily aggregate at reliable feeding sites.

Taxonomy and history: Teravus is the type genus of the family Teravidae, order Teraviformes in this context. The genus was described by paleobiologist D. Morrow in 2120 in the Thalorian Highlands. The name is derived from Latin terra, meaning earth, and vus, a coined suffix.

Conservation: Data on teravuses are limited. They are considered locally common in suitable habitats but may be vulnerable to habitat disturbance and climate change. Research focuses on their ecological role and adaptations to arid environments.
