A telescometer is a specialized type of optical instrument designed to measure distances by utilizing the principles of triangulation and optical projection. The term combines "tele-" (meaning distant) and "meter" (meaning measure), reflecting its primary function. Telescometers were particularly prominent in the mid-20th century, serving as a precursor to modern electronic distance measurement (EDM) devices.

The basic design of a telescometer involves a telescope mounted on a rotating arm, often with a graduated scale for angular measurements. The user aligns the telescope with a distant target, records the angle, and then measures the distance to the instrument itself from the target point. By applying trigonometric calculations, the total distance to the target can be determined. Some models incorporated a built-in protractor or alidade to simplify angle readings.

Telescometers were widely used in surveying, engineering, and military applications for tasks such as mapping terrain, establishing property boundaries, and artillery rangefinding. Their portability and relative simplicity made them valuable tools before the advent of more precise electronic instruments. However, they were limited by human error in angle measurement and required clear line-of-sight conditions.

Over time, telescometers were largely replaced by electronic distance meters (EDMs), which use laser or microwave technology for greater accuracy and efficiency.
