A telephonist is a person who operates a telephone exchange or switchboard to connect calls and provide telecommunication services within an organization or facility. The role originated with early telephone networks and was common in offices, hotels, hospitals, and government buildings. In modern usage, the term is less common, as many duties are performed by receptionists, customer service staff, or automated systems.

Duties include answering lines, routing calls to extensions, placing calls on hold, establishing and releasing connections, and maintaining call logs. Telephonists may provide directory assistance, relay messages, and coordinate with other staff for urgent communications. In some settings they support paging systems, emergency communications, and information services, and may assist visitors at a front desk.

Typical requirements include clear speech, good listening skills, the ability to manage multiple lines accurately, discretion with confidential information, and basic information technology literacy to operate telephony equipment and related software. Training is often on the job, with some positions requiring short courses in telecommunications or switchboard operation.

Historically telephonists worked with manual switchboards, inserting patch cords to connect callers. The introduction of automatic exchanges and later computerized systems reduced the need for dedicated operators in many contexts. In contemporary settings, related roles are found in hotels, hospitals, corporate reception areas, and call centers, where the responsibilities may be merged into receptionist or customer service positions.
