Teleobjektiiv, often translated as telephoto lens, is a type of photographic lens that has a focal length equal to or greater than 50mm for a 35mm film format or equivalent. Its primary characteristic is its ability to magnify distant subjects, making them appear closer to the camera. This magnification is achieved through a long focal length, which results in a narrow field of view.

Telephoto lenses are categorized by their focal length, with longer focal lengths providing greater magnification. Common types include medium telephotos (e.g., 85mm to 135mm), super telephotos (e.g., 300mm and beyond), and telephoto zooms, which offer a range of focal lengths within a single lens.

The shallow depth of field produced by telephoto lenses is another significant feature. This characteristic allows photographers to isolate their subject from the background, creating a pleasingly blurred backdrop known as bokeh. This makes them ideal for portrait photography, wildlife photography, and sports photography, where capturing distant action or isolating a subject is crucial.

Despite their magnification capabilities, telephoto lenses can be susceptible to camera shake due to their longer focal lengths. Therefore, tripods or image stabilization systems are often employed to ensure sharp images, especially when shooting at slower shutter speeds or with very long focal lengths. The physical size and weight of telephoto lenses also tend to increase with their focal length.
