The format emphasizes concise headlines, a lead story, and a sequence of reports, followed by weather and sports segments.

Regional usage varies. In Portugal, Telejornal refers to the flagship news program of RTP, the public broadcaster. In Brazil and other Lusophone markets, the term is more commonly used descriptively for television news in general, while many networks brand their programs as Jornal Nacional, Jornal Hoje, or equivalent. Nonetheless, the concept remains the same: a regularly scheduled, professionally produced news broadcast designed to inform the public and frame current events.
