Tekokuitu refers to any artificial or man-made fiber. Unlike natural fibers which are derived from plants or animals, tekokuitu are synthesized through chemical processes. These fibers are created by extruding a viscous solution or melt of a polymer through a spinneret, forming long filaments that are then cooled and solidified.

The development of tekokuitu began in the late 19th century with the invention of rayon, an early regenerated cellulosic fiber. Since then, a wide variety of synthetic fibers have been developed, each with unique properties tailored for specific applications. Common types of tekokuitu include polyester, nylon, acrylic, spandex, and rayon. Polyester is known for its durability, wrinkle resistance, and versatility, making it widely used in clothing and home furnishings. Nylon offers exceptional strength and elasticity, often found in hosiery, ropes, and carpets. Acrylic fibers mimic the feel and appearance of wool, providing warmth and softness, and are used in sweaters and blankets. Spandex, also known as elastane or Lycra, is prized for its exceptional stretch and recovery, essential for activewear and form-fitting garments. Rayon, though derived from cellulose, is considered a semi-synthetic fiber due to the chemical processing involved.

Tekokuitu offer several advantages over natural fibers, including consistent quality, customizable properties like strength, elasticity, and moisture-wicking capabilities, and often lower cost. However, environmental concerns related to their production and disposal, particularly microplastic pollution from synthetic fibers, are significant considerations. Research and development continue to focus on creating more sustainable and biodegradable options within the realm of tekokuitu.
