teikoku

Teikoku is a Japanese noun meaning “empire,” written with the kanji 帝国. The first character, 帝, refers to an emperor, while 国 means country or realm; together they denote a political unit governed as an empire. The term is used both as a generic label for imperial polities and in proper names.

Historically, the most prominent usage is Dai-Nippon Teikoku (大日本帝国), the Empire of Japan, which ruled Japan from the Meiji Restoration in 1868 until the end of World War II in 1947. In governing documents, educational texts, and wartime propaganda, the state identified itself as an imperial nation. After Japan adopted a new postwar constitution, the sovereign state became Nihon-koku (日本国), and the term teikoku fell out of official usage for the modern state, though it remains common in historical discourse and literature.

In modern usage, teikoku appears mainly in historical contexts or in fiction and alternate-history works to denote imagined empires or distant political entities. It can also appear in the names of organizations, brands, or fictional factions in Japanese media, often for stylistic or narrative effect rather than to imply a real current government.
