Teeth Incisors

Incisors are a type of front teeth located at the front center of the mouth. They play a crucial role in biting and cutting food during the initial stages of mastication. Humans typically have eight incisors, with four positioned in the upper jaw (maxillary incisors) and four in the lower jaw (mandibular incisors).

Incisors are characterized by their flat, sharp-edged crowns, which facilitate the slicing of food. They are usually narrower and thinner compared to other types of teeth, such as canines or molars. The central incisors are positioned centrally and are larger and more prominent, while the lateral incisors flank them on either side, being slightly smaller.

The structure of an incisor includes a visible crown covered by enamel, a single root embedded in the jawbone, and the interior pulp chamber containing nerves and blood vessels. Enamel, the hardest tissue in the human body, protects the tooth from decay and wear.

Incisors begin to erupt in early childhood, typically around the age of six, and are usually fully developed by age eight or nine. They continue to be replaced by permanent teeth, which usually complete by early adolescence. Proper dental hygiene and regular check-ups are essential to maintain the health and functionality of incisors.

In addition to their functional role, incisors also contribute significantly to a person’s facial aesthetics and speech. Damage or loss of these teeth can affect both appearance and function, making dental care and preventive measures important for overall oral health.
