tbiopszia, a term used in some Hungarian medical writings, denotes a tissue biopsy, a procedure in which a sample of tissue is removed from the body for diagnostic examination. The aim is to establish a diagnosis, assess the nature or stage of disease, guide treatment decisions, or monitor response to therapy. Tissue samples may be taken from organs such as the breast, skin, liver, kidney, lymph nodes, lung, or gastrointestinal tract, among others.

Biopsies are performed by various methods: percutaneous needle biopsy (fine-needle aspiration or core needle biopsy) guided by ultrasound, CT, or MRI; endoscopic biopsy using a flexible scope; and surgical biopsy, including incisional or excisional procedures.

Prior to the procedure, informed consent is obtained, and anticoagulant medications may be adjusted. Local anesthesia is common; sedation or general anesthesia may be used for deeper or more extensive sampling. The collected tissue is prepared and sent to a pathology laboratory for histology, cytology, or special tests such as immunohistochemistry or molecular analysis. Depending on findings, results may be available within days or longer.

Indications include evaluation of a suspicious lesion found on imaging, confirmation of cancer or infection, evaluation of inflammatory or autoimmune disease, or staging of known disease. Risks include bleeding, infection, pain, and injury to surrounding structures; specific risks vary by-site (for example, pneumothorax after chest or lung biopsy). Most procedures have low complication rates and are performed on an outpatient basis when possible.

Interpretation relies on a pathologist. The result may be diagnostic or nondiagnostic, sometimes requiring repeat biopsy or additional testing. Aftercare generally includes wound care and activity restrictions for a short period, with follow-up to discuss results and treatment plans.
