Taupositive refers to the presence of abnormally phosphorylated tau protein in biological samples, most commonly in brain tissue or cerebrospinal fluid. This phosphorylation is a key pathological hallmark of several neurodegenerative diseases, collectively known as tauopathies. In healthy individuals, tau protein plays a crucial role in stabilizing microtubules, which are essential components of neurons. However, in tauopathies, tau becomes hyperphosphorylated, detaches from microtubules, and aggregates into neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs). These tangles disrupt neuronal function and contribute to cell death.
Detecting taupositive material is a significant diagnostic tool. Post-mortem examination of brain tissue definitively identifies NFTs.
