Tauntauns are a species of omnivorous hexapodal creatures native to the ice planet Hoth. They are well-adapted to the harsh, cold environment, possessing thick white fur that provides camouflage against the snow and insulation against extreme temperatures. Their bodies are sturdy and built for traversing snowy terrain, with broad feet that help prevent them from sinking into the snow. Tauntauns have large, dark eyes, likely to aid vision in the dim light of Hoth's long winters.

These creatures are known for their distinctive smell, often described as pungent or foul. This odor is a result of their digestive processes and specialized diet, which includes both vegetation and smaller ice-dwelling creatures. Despite their unpleasant scent, Tauntauns are relatively docile and have been domesticated by the native inhabitants of Hoth, as well as by Rebel Alliance personnel stationed on the planet.

In the Star Wars universe, Tauntauns are primarily recognized for their use as mounts. Their ability to withstand the cold and navigate the icy landscapes made them invaluable for transportation and scouting missions across Hoth's frozen plains. Rebel soldiers, particularly those of the 501st Legion during the Battle of Hoth, famously rode Tauntauns. It is also known that in survival situations, their bodies could be used for shelter, with the inner lining of their carcasses providing a temporary refuge from the freezing temperatures.
