Tasapainotilan, literally the equilibrium state in Finnish, refers to a condition in which a system’s macroscopic properties remain constant over time because opposing processes balance. The concept is used across sciences to describe situations where variables do not exhibit net change, even though underlying activity continues.

Several types of tasapainotila are commonly distinguished. Mechanical equilibrium occurs when there are no unbalanced forces, so the system’s position is unchanging. Thermal or thermal-energetic equilibrium means temperatures are uniform and heat flow between parts has ceased. Chemical equilibrium describes a state in which forward and reverse reactions occur at equal rates, yielding constant concentrations. Electrical or electrochemical equilibrium involves balanced electrical potentials and no net current. Dynamic equilibrium refers to ongoing processes that balance such that observable averages remain steady, even as microscopically those processes persist.

In practice, tasapainotilan is used to describe systems in thermodynamics, chemistry, physics, biology, and economics. In chemistry, reaching chemical equilibrium allows prediction of concentrations; in physics and engineering, dynamic equilibria model steady-state operation of devices and flows; in biology, organisms maintain internal stability (homeostasis) that supports overall balance; in economics, market equilibrium describes when supply and demand balance at a stable price.

Identification often relies on stability under small disturbances and the absence of net fluxes between major variables. The term emphasizes balance among competing influences rather than mere lack of activity.
