The term originates from the Finnish word *tarkka*, meaning "accurate," and *mille*, which translates to "thousand." Historically, this system was used to denote distances in units of 10,000 Finnish meters (approximately 6.2137 miles or 10 kilometers). The practice was particularly common in the context of logging operations, where precise measurements were essential for planning and resource management.

The method involved marking trees or landmarks at intervals of 10,000 meters along a designated route, often using visible signs such as painted marks, notches, or other identifiable features.
