Tarkkimille

Tarkkimille, also known as *Tarkki* or *Tarkki-mille*, refers to a traditional Finnish method of measuring and marking distances, particularly in forestry and land surveying. The term originates from the Finnish word *tarkka*, meaning "accurate," and *mille*, which translates to "thousand." Historically, this system was used to denote distances in units of 10,000 Finnish meters (approximately 6.2137 miles or 10 kilometers). The practice was particularly common in the context of logging operations, where precise measurements were essential for planning and resource management.

The method involved marking trees or landmarks at intervals of 10,000 meters along a designated route, often using visible signs such as painted marks, notches, or other identifiable features. These markers served as reference points for loggers, surveyors, and forest managers to navigate and organize large-scale operations efficiently. The system was widely adopted in Finland’s extensive forested regions, where accurate distance tracking was critical for sustainable timber harvesting.

While modern technology, such as GPS and digital mapping tools, has largely replaced traditional methods like tarkkimille, the term remains a part of Finnish forestry history. It reflects the country’s long-standing reliance on practical, field-tested techniques to manage natural resources.
