Tapings, or tapping, is the act of applying tape to join, seal, or protect surfaces, as well as the act of recording audio or video on tape or other storage media. The term covers several practices that share the common element of tape as a binding or recording medium.

Adhesive tape is used in many fields. In construction and packaging, tapes such as masking tape, packaging tape, and duct tape provide quick binding or sealing. Electrical tape insulates wires; athletic tape is used for support in sports; gaffer tape is widely used in stage and film for temporary fixes. Tape materials vary in backing, adhesive type, and thickness, and selection depends on surface, temperature, and duration.

In media production, taping denotes capturing performances or events for later broadcast or archival use. This historically referred to magnetic tape; with digital recording, the term persists as a conventional label for recorded material rather than live transmission.

Removal and safety considerations include avoiding skin irritation during skin contact, ensuring clean removal to minimize residue, and following safety guidelines for electrical or industrial tapes. Environmental considerations may include recycling or disposal of used tapes and cores, as well as choosing tapes with fewer hazardous components when possible.
