The tantalite group refers to a family of tantalum- and niobium-bearing oxide minerals that are part of the columbite-tantalite series. They are characterized by tantalum and niobium occupying the Nb,Ta sites in the octahedral M2+ framework, with iron and/or manganese occupying the other cation site. The series spans from Nb-rich columbite to Ta-rich tantalite, forming a continuous solid solution between endmembers.

The minerals crystallize in the orthorhombic system and typically form prismatic to tabular crystals, commonly in coarse-grained aggregates within granitic and pegmatitic rocks. They are usually opaque with a submetallic to resinous luster, black to brown in color, and have a relatively high density due to tantalum content. Hardness is about 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, and the streak is gray to brown. The exact composition varies with the relative amounts of Fe2+ and Mn2+ on the A-site and Nb vs Ta on the B-site, reflecting the extensive solid solution in the group.

Occurrence and association: Tantalite group minerals are typical of late-stage crystallization in granitic and alkaline pegmatites, where they occur as large, individual crystals or intergrown with quartz, feldspars, spodumene, and mica. They may also occur in hydrothermal veins. Because of their Ta-rich chemistry, they can be among the more valuable ore minerals in pegmatites.

Economic significance: Tantalum is a strategically important metal used in capacitors, electronics, and specialty alloys. The tantalite group minerals are the primary sources of tantalum ore, and mining and processing emphasize separation of Ta-rich phases from Nb and other gangue minerals, followed by refining for tantalum metal or oxide products.
