Since many breast cancers are fueled by estrogen, this action helps to slow or stop their growth.

The drug is commonly prescribed to women who have estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer. It is used in both early-stage and advanced breast cancer. For early-stage ER+ breast cancer, tamoksifeeni is often given after surgery to reduce the risk of the cancer returning or spreading to other parts of the body. It can also be used to treat men with breast cancer. In addition to its therapeutic uses, tamoksifeeni is also prescribed to women at high risk of developing breast cancer to help prevent the disease.
