Taljer, the Swedish term for pulleys, are simple machines consisting of a wheel with a grooved rim around which a rope, belt, or cable runs. By changing the direction of the input force, taljer allow a person to lift loads or transmit power with less effort, depending on the configuration. They are widely used in lifting devices, belt drives, and rigging systems.

Common configurations include fixed taljar (mounted in a frame), movable taljar (attached to the load), and compound arrangements such as block and tackle, which combine several pulleys to increase mechanical advantage. In belt drive systems, a pulley transfers rotational motion between shafts via a belt; idler taljar guide or tension the belt but do not transmit torque.

Construction and performance: a talja consists of a wheel (sheave) with a groove for the rope or belt, an axle and bearings, and a frame or mounting.
